Hmm. So I checked my credit right before or after I lost my job, and my credit score is actually crazy high--bordering on the "excellent" category.
Unfortunately my credit card has been accumulating a balance (I can't quite afford groceries with unemployment. >_< Oh, and I had to fix the car, which was in the neighborhood of $200). My interest rate has gone down since I got the card (from 19.8 to 16.5%) but obviously that's getting racked up, too.
So I got an offer in the mail the other day for another card (from woohoo! WaMu, lol) and in addition to being a good solid card in general with FICO credit score monitoring included for free, they're offering 0% interest on balance transfers (NOT purchases) until September of next year.
So I applied, with the idea of moving my Capital One balance over to that so that I can make minimum payments until I get a job without accruing additional interest. I had to put in a number before knowing my credit line (or if I'd even GET the card) so I went with $500--nice and round and freeing up most of my Capital One credit line, and also being small enough that it might be under the amount of credit they would offer me.
Despite my "annual income" being barely over $6000 a year (from unemployment, not that I can actually get it for a year, but that's current weekly x4, x12) and employment being "other," I got accepted for the card.
And I got a $4,000 credit line.
WTF?? =O
Not that that's not awesome, and not that I'm not going to move the rest of my Capital One balance over, but--WOW.
I'm glad Nico kept hammering credit lessons in my head before I got my cards. I tried not to listen and it still stuck and now I have awesome credit. YAY.
Oh, and the card is going to be blue. They didn't offer purple so I matched my other credit card. That and electric blue was the prettiest of the colors they DID offer.
