So, like I said previously, I want to get this up on the interwebs before the next episode of Glee airs, because I'm pretty sure I'm going to get Jossed fairly quickly--I wasn't sure I'd get around to writing this at all because of that, in fact.

I won't be able to get started on my website until the first at the very earliest, and by then there will only be five days until new episode, so just to buy myself a wee bit of extra time, I'm posting this here for now. I will possibly/probably be deleting this entry when I can get this up on the site; we'll see if I'll work out how to enable comments on there--at this point I think it may require using actual code (and I may or may not be up to the challenge).

So, that said, here is a bit of fluff for you--the first thing I've written in a few months, the first thing that's not D2D that I've written in probably over a year. Yikes. Be kind.

Title: Three Things I Need to Tell You
Characters: Kurt, Blaine
Rating: PG, mild language

Summary: Blaine makes a few small confessions to Kurt.

It wasn’t like Blaine to not be the epitome of calm, cool, and collected. )

I'm a member on the local Freecycle mailing list. I ignore most of it; we get about 10x more "wanted" posts than "offer" posts, but someone today was asking for a copy of Microsoft Word.

I emailed him and let him know about OpenOffice and AbiWord.

I feel strangely like I have made the world a better place.

~*~

In other news, I have written a short Glee fanfic and am trying to decide where to share it. I want it up soon because I have a feeling it's going to get completely Jossed by the next episode, or one shortly thereafter.

In other other news, I am 99.9999999% sure I will be opening my own website. At this point it's just a matter of if I care enough to pay for a domain name or if I'm okay with mywebsitename.weebly.com. And I think I might actually care enough, because "weebly" sounds really dweeby to me.

Question: since it'll be my personal site, would it be weird if it was mywebsitename.me (instead of .com)? I am both kind of weirded out by the idea and strangely enchanted by it...also .me's are cheaper. XD

Cody and I have been saving--we want to get him a new MacBook Pro, and then I would get his MacBook. We've been discussing it for a long, long time.

My computer's hard drive has been intermittently making some very scary, slightly grindy noises here lately. I've recently backed up EVERYTHING and have taken to saving new pictures to my external drive and cutting out the middleman. Cody has assured me that if it does just go kaput out of nowhere, he'll have me an internet machine up and running quickly. (Likely a desktop, though, which kind of sucks. But I would still have my iBook--which WOULD be my main computer if it could handle the internet. Alas!)

So now my computing habits are kind of shifting. When we last reformatted my computer he put a very stripped-down version of Windows on here and it's lacking things like a huge assortment of fonts (I forgot to back up my collection before the reformat, but it's okay, there's a kajillion free ones on the internet if I need them) and screensavers, but I haven't really wanted to replace them--I'll need different ones when I switch to Mac. I never reinstalled the Sims since I don't want to start things just to have to scrap them when I reinstall on a Mac.

And of course, OF COURSE, while this is going on is when my drive to write is kicking in and going "REMEMBER ME???"

And a website. I'm seriously considering shutting down my deviantArt/FFN/Freedom of Speech fanfiction accounts and just opening my own gosh-darn website. Toying with that, yet; I'd likely have to work on some sort of subdomain system (ie, mywebsite.bigcompanywebsite.com) because I don't think I care enough to pay for it. And I guess there's a chance I could make pennies a day from ads.

It's all so beautiful and perfectly organized in my head. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Oh, and I want to post makeup tutorials on YouTube. The trick is going to be getting the video to be high-enough quality to see what you need to see without having a huge filesize. Grah. I'll probably need Cody's help; or I could just wait until the MacBook is mine. Then it'd be easy-peasy because the webcam is built in.

It all comes back to this: as well as this computer has served me (and we've had some so-so times), it's time to move on.

I guess that while the internet will always be part of our lives, where one spends their time on it will be constantly changing...?

Well crap. Just when I was thinking of opening a separate account to be my creative catchall.

It took me a week to set everything up, but FINALLY, I've got Detour to Destiny a home of its own--here on LJ.

[personal profile] detourdestiny

It's full of awesome. ^_^ And now there's going to be no more drama like there was on the fanfiction websites. (FFN deleted us for quoting lyrics, FOS is now offering anything BUT Freedom of Speech.)

So now it seems like all is going to be smooth sailing insofar as getting it FINISHED and posted. I've gotten back into the writing groove, and Shelly's all graduated. The only thing that can interfere there is wedding plans. Hee!

If you want to know what I'm talking about, you can read the FAQ here. :D

So I'm reading this Rurouni Kenshin fanfic in which Kenshin is immortal. (It's a Highlander crossover; but that's almost a pointless detail, you don't have to be at ALL familiar with that 'verse for it to make sense. When the author discusses that which comes from Highlander-world, she explains.) It's spawned a few sequels; I started out reading the one that she was/is currently updating, and am working my way back in between new chapters.

Here's her FFN profile, if you're curious. The first fic is Swordsmen, then the one I'm reading now, Walk Not Alone, and the latest one is A Rurouni Goes to College (the one she's currently still working on). There's also A Life Lived, which covers Kenshin's life from birth, but I haven't started reading that simply due to its sheer length. It's a bit daunting.

ANYWAY. There was actually a point to this.

In the chapter of Walk Not Alone I was just reading, chapter 18, the following conversation takes place:

"Do you miss the past?" Richie asked, curiously.

Kenshin shrugged. "I miss the people. I miss my friends and family. But I don't miss the time. The past isn't so romantic when you've lived it. I happen to like electric lights, running hot water, and flush toilets." There was another one of those curious pauses before he added, in a quieter tone of voice, as if remembering old personal tragedies, "... and modern medicine."

"I guess."

"My parents died for want of a few drops of bleach in their drinking water, or failing that, a few pennies worth of oral electrolytes and a simple antibiotic," Kenshin said, bluntly. "Gatorade could have saved their lives."

My GOD. Have you ever been more grateful to live in modern times?

(If I was writing this fic, I would tend to romanticize the past. I wouldn't go to the lengths of research required to make it that good... *coughD2Dcough* So props to her.)

To the people wondering why I'm spamming up their flists, I swear that this will be the last post today. Really. If I think of anything else I'll add it to this one. ^_-

Kat-chan ([profile] darkest_crocus) wrote me a story for my birthday, and she's been posting bits and pieces ever since my birthday. You can now read the whole thing here. READ IT. You know you want to. (And, Katchan, regarding what you mentioned on DA: I think it would be a WONDERFUL animated movie. Nor would it make a bad live-action movie, but it really doesn't seem as suited to that.)

I posted my first pic at OC_art100, the table for all of them can be found in the links box to the left. Yay me and HTML! I'm going to go through all the pics I've already drawn, see which ones are suited to which prompts, and spend time over the next few weeks and scan and post those. Whatever prompts are left (I'm thinking I'll only have about 25 out of 100 filled, lol) will go onto my D2D art list. (I have ideas more often than I have time to draw, and therefore keep a list of all the pics I want to draw eventually, lol.)

Had dinner with Nico and then went to his place last night, and walked down to the lake. He still hasn't managed to teach me to make a stone skip more than twice, lol. I can't even do that consistently. We found the remains of a dead deer, ew. All that was left was its head. Ick ick ick. Burned two more CD's (like I need them, my song count is approaching 3,000, if I would enter in all the CD's I haven't yet, it'd be around 2,950, and by the time I get done copying all the CD's I've borrowed it'll be higher yet!).

Nico, FYI: I do like Flogging Molly. I've heard Roller Coaster before, just didn't know who it was. And the title is NOT "Stop, Children, What's that Sound?" It's "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. ^_- Yay Google.

The physical science class voted--unanimously--to scale up all the exams and scale down the final so that they're all the same weight, and so right now I have a 93.5 in the class and I don't have to take the final if I don't want to. If I do my grade MIGHT go up, if I don't it'll stay the same. In any case it won't go down. I probably will take it, though, just out of curiosity more than anything.

Tonight is the cast party for Acting/Theatre Practicum. Free pizza YAY!

Here. Mimi's Decision--Totally readable by a Digimon ousider. I would put up more but FOS seems to be having issues at the moment.
rena_librarian: (Default)
Growing Up, How I Spent My Summer, I Love You More Now..., and You Look So Good In Love are all up at FOS now. All are Digimon fanfiction, and (I just realized) all have the commonality of taking place a significant amount of time after the events of the show.

Non-fan readability:
Growing Up--Other than references to the kids' local celebrity, the few mentions of "that night" are described well enough that you don't need the show.
How I Spent My Summer--Other than needing to know that ALL the characters contained herein have known each other ten years or more, it could stand alone.
I Love You More Now...--Other than a reference to the crush Dai had on Kari as a kid, and the fact that the book Takeru is writing is about the experiences they had in the DigiWorld, this could stand alone.
You Look So Good In Love--Knowledge of the song might help, but it could be read totally blind and still convey emotion.

This is my best friend Kat's site. Go there or die. ^_- It's also been added to my links box at left. The best thing on there right now is Faerie Tale, which she has written for me as an ongoing birthday present. And she has pretty art for it too! I mean, look at this...

I just posted "Never The Less" and "What Do You REALLY Want For Christmas?" at FOS. They're not showing up yet, but they should soon. Both are Digimon fics, but you wouldn't have to be a fan to follow the story if you want to give them a read.

As I think I mentioned in my LJ already (I know I told most of you), I regained the files that had been locked up on my dead laptop, and now have stories to work on that I haven't been able to work on for a long, long time.

The foremost of these (and, in fact, the only one I've actually started working on again) is In Another World.

This is something that I think predates D2D (as far as when work began on it, anyway), and I know (from my author notes) predates Lalaith (which is up at FFN, if not yet FOS). It is an LotR fic, and the plot is in some ways similar to D2D, but it is NOT a clone story. The style is totally different. In Another World is something that D2D could have been, I think, but something I would never have wanted D2D to be.

It's darker, to put it simply, and while D2D has its dark and angsty moments, there's always comic relief just around the corner. I want to say that In Another World is more realistic. Shelly has commented on the difference between Shelly/Legolas and Sarah/Frodo--the latter don't ever fight, the only moments that aren't sunshine and roses for them is when they're dealing with being separated, and while I like to think that it happens, the truth is that it's a rarity.

In Another World is the story of Shyda, a modern girl who meets Frodo (like my character in D2D), and has a very different relationship with him than the character based on me does. They have issues, things aren't sunshine and roses for them.

Why all this rant? I think I'm afraid that people who have read D2D will read In Another World and be disappointed, or that people who discover me via In Another World will then read D2D and be disappointed. It could be "OMG, In Another World was so amazing and real and then D2D was this stupid bit of fluff!" or "D2D was so great and then I read In Another World and it was all depressing! WTF?"

What I really hope is that my readers are intelligent enough to appreciate both styles the way I do, and that I'll get positive feedback. I worry that Hobbity and Shelly will be the only ones to appreciate In Another World as the masterwork that I view it as.

That being said, what I really wanted to do was post a bit of a teaser for In Another World. I want to see if I can draw some D2D fans out of the woodwork, maybe whet some appetites...it's going to be a while before anything goes up officially at FOS, but I can tell you that once my three big projects (the veteran's tea, my veteran interview, and the second Honors Sociology paper) for school are done, I'm really going to throw myself into this (at least between D2D chapters, lol). I've already written 22.5 out of 47 planned scenes (and I mean really written, they're postable as-is), so if I really apply myself, I could conceivably have it done long before the end of this summer.

So, anyway...I'd really like to hear from any and all LotR fans on this one--whether you're following D2D or not--even if you're new to fanfiction. If you are following D2D and this journal but have never commented here, this is your chance. (Really. I welcome my fan-lurkers--I know there's at least two of you! ^_^)

I finally found a moment to try posting at my RenaissanceGrrl account at FOS. ^_^* I had a lot up there and it all vanished, as did D2D shortly after we first tried to post it, but since that's now up and going smoothly I thought I'd try again. (If they disappear again, LET ME KNOW!) The link's at the left, "Me @ Freedom of Speech Fan Fiction" under the "Visit these places!" heading. I reposted "What Counts" (a Lost one-shot), "In the Aftermath" (a Digimon Tamers one-shot) and "Easy Enough for You To Say" (an original poem). Seemed like a fairly random sampling of what people can expect, I pretty much write wherever the wind blows me...

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] gamgeefest...

10 signs you are reading a fic by RenaissanceGrrl...
10. There are quotes, be they in the AN's or by the characters.
9. All the romantic rejections are gentle, all breakups are smooth and mutual.
8. Any serious swearing is in a foreign language.
7. There are comedic moments, even in darkish pieces.
6. Something--an OC, a location, an object like a piece of clothing or CD--is drawn from real life.
5. The plot of the story revolves around one major plot point of the canon being altered.
4. Misunderstandings between couples don't last long.
3. Angst is not the end of the road.
2. Though the ending may not necessarily be perfectly happy, it's got a strong note of hope.

And the number one sign you're reading a fic by RenaissanceGrrl...
1. The sap is so thick that your keyboard gets sticky.

Two stray thoughts that crossed my mind. (Actually, the former was inspired by Dad.)

(Both are click to enlarge, as they're QUITE huge.) Like I told you, Hobbity, feel free (read: PLEASE!) to rip these off for Ringses.

This is also for those of you who don't really know my drawing style to get a glimpse of it. (Mind you, I can paint fine-art style, that's different.)

Stories I have written in 2005: Okay, okay...this was a really unproductive year for me, other than D2D/SID, for which I can only claim half credit. BUT, since I'm in the process of moving to FOS, and the rereading/reposting process makes you reconsider your work closely, I'm going to fill this out keeping ALL my fanfiction in mind. Digimon:
And So It Was...Before It Began
Constant Changes
The Dance
Deception
Different Tastes
The Girl in the Denim Jacket (and its one-shot songfic sequel, As Long As You Love Me)
Growing Up
Happy Valentine's Day
How I Spent My Summer
I Guess
I Love You More Now
In the Aftermath
Making a Match
Mimi's Decision
Nevertheless
The Right Direction
Stuck
What Do You REALLY Want For Christmas?
You Look So Good In Love

Sonic the Hedgehog:
Everything You Know Is Wrong
Robotic Regeneration

LotR:
Detour to Destiny/Straying Into a Dream (WIP)
Everybody's Free (to Wear Mithril)
Lalaith
O, Caption (parodies of "O, Captain, My Captain", one of which is LotR-themed)

Lost:
What Counts

Shenmue:
Nozomi's Wish

Originals:
Easy Enough For You to Say
Sonnet to Tim

My favorite of my own stories this year: I've long thought that "Constant Changes" was my masterpiece, but I think D2D and its followups are my favorite, really.
My best story this year: To avoid stealing Shelly's credit, "What Counts."
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: All of them! Lol, j/k...but it IS hard to pick just one. I think that despite the lovely reviews it got, no one can understand the work that went into "Everything You Know Is Wrong," but as far as being under-reviewed... I was expecting a lot more feedback on "What Counts," since for once my fiction was within the "latest big thing" category, lol.
Most fun story: "Everything You Know Is Wrong" or "Everybody's Free (To Wear Mithril)."
Most sexy story: D2D probably pushes the line most often, lots of kissing. And smiley face boxers. And more swimming scenes than I would have thought possible.
Story with single sexiest moment: "I Love You More Now" has a reference to Takeru "wanting to prove his love right then," but I think "Constant Changes" probably takes the cake here--Ken and Miyako are on their honeymoon bed about to do the deed when our archvillain materializes. (Though there are similar moments coming in D2D. Nothing over PG-13, though.)
Hardest story to write: "The Girl in the Denim Jacket," because I was fairly new to the series (I had not seen much Digimon and a lot of my info was from reading about it rather than seeing it myself), to writing (prior to that I had not written anything of substantial length), and to fanfiction (it was my first true fanfic).
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: "Everything You Know Is Wrong." Come on. A quintuple songfic to songs I'd never heard, about a pairing I don't really like. XD Written by request, in case you're shaking your head--songs and plot provided, but it was still a doozy to wrap my head around.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: "The Dance" made me not hate Mimi. "Deception" made me realize that Hikari was not all sweetness and light. "Happy Valentine's Day part II" made me see past Jun's Nazgurlish behavior to the cool person underneath.
Favorite major canon character of 2005: Frodo. Like, duh.
Favorite minor canon character of 2005: Admittedly, I did not expect for Haldir to take on such a personality. (Granted, it's a haughty, I'm-an-Elf-and-I-tolerate-you-because-I-was-ordered-to personality, but he's so darn lovable by the time we get done...)
Favorite original character of 2005: A character that has yet to appear in the D2D saga. Here's a hint: the name starts with a T, and it's not "the."
Biggest disappointment: SID getting pulled from FFN! >_< XD Seriously, though--I thought "Everybody's Free (To Wear Mithril)" would catch on more--I thought more people were familiar with the source material. Mayhap I need to post it at a parody site rather than a fanfiction archive.
Biggest surprise: "Everything You Know Is Wrong" is still getting the occasional review! I've gotten at least two since FFN (finally!!) put in the review-response feature. (Mayhap people are struggling to get past the bad Sonic X fiction that's gotta be absolutely flooding FFN now?)
Most telling story: "Different Tastes" speaks volumes as to how I get along with Dad--we just plain do not understand each other, and sometimes we have a day like this story, but unfortunately we generally end up back where we started. "Easy Enough for You to Say" is pretty much my current rant, too.
What's next? What I will write FOR SURE (not counting stuff that's just notes or stray thoughts): Loads more about Shelly and Sarah (here's a hint: SID only goes to 50 chapters, but there are currently 138 chapters total for the saga...you do the math), an Elijah songfic to Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved," a Charlie/Claire songfic, and a Charlie vignette.

The D2D quiz
The SID quiz

Don't worry, the latter only covers POSTED chapters.

But you might want to give 37 and 38 a read before taking the quiz! XD

ETA: Sorry, better links to the quizzes now. My bad!

I don't know why Shelly hasn't got D2D and SID up at fosff.net yet.

However, I've opened up a RenaissanceGrrl account there for myself and have moved all my FictionPress.com stuff over there. http://www.fosff.net/viewuser.php?uid=3414 The link is also in the links list at left. (Visit these places: Me @ Freedom of Speech Fan Fiction.) I am in the process of moving over what I can from FFN (there's no Early Edition category at FOS yet, lol).

Anyway. Farewell, Fan Fiction Nazis!

Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] gamgeefest a few weeks ago, lol:
If you happen to be working on some new writing project, fanfiction or what have you, post exactly one sentence from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favourite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

Oh, Hobbity will tell you I am the master of choosing the most infuriating ones, lol. Unfortunately some of my works in progress are inaccessible until I can get my laptop to the shop, but I'll certainly post what little I can from my piece-of-crap desktop...which is turning out to be more than I thought...

A Last Unicorn fic, tentatively titled Regretfully (this is strictly jottings at the moment, it's very much on the back burner):
"When I was the last unicorn it mattered, but it matters not now..."
A yet-to-be-titled Lost fic:
[Charlie] tried to convince himself that the red spots he found near the door were just rust, instead of the blood he knew it had to be.
A Lost songfic, I Got a Feeling:
"Did that really just happen...without you wanting to slap me, I mean?"
An Elijah/OC fic, tentatively titled The Avatar:
"You can even tell other people about me, be seen with me...you might want to avoid calling a press conference and making this widely known, nobody's tried that yet."
An Elijah/OC & Orli/OC fic, untitled:
"If this was one of your dreams, Billy Boyd would have walked in wearing the Master and Commander costume or we would be reciting The Importance of Being Earnest or something wacko like that by now."
A Dom/OC fic, tentatively titled Artists:
He was a constant mystery to me, and if it took me the rest of our lives to figure him out, well, then, fine, it took me the rest of our lives.
Definitely Maybe, a sorta-songfic starring Dom and Billy:
[Her] eyes were wide, more because Billy had done that than because of anything she'd seen--he'd been telling the truth, the boxers weren't particularly interesting.
Also starring Dom and Billy, tentatively titled Treebeard Days:
"Make yourself comfortable, because we sure can't."
A parody...The Princess Bride...LotR Style:
"And everyone knows that a secret is something that you only tell your best friends," Peregrin pointed out, then decided to push his luck and added, "Estella won't mind."
And I'm thinking of writing a fic based on this sentence of Tolkien's:
"Pippin afterwards recalled little of either food or drink, for his mind was filled with the light upon the elf-faces, and the sound of voices so various and so beautiful that he felt in a waking dream." --Three Is Company, FotR

And, oh...heck...let me leave some D2D spoilers for Hobbity (and any possible D2D fan-lurkers, lol).
From the next chapter of MINE that will be posted:
"Are you entirely sure you were dead?"
From the one currently under construction (fifty chapters later...Shelly hasn't even read this yet!):
So much for "Absence makes the heart grow fonder," I thought.
