It's been floating around in my head since I was fourteen, though I didn't decide for sure that I don't want kids until around the time I started college, and didn't discover the term "childfree" until December-ish 2007. I'll add to this when new reasons occur to me, or ones that are escaping my memory at the moment are remembered.
Note that these are my reasons--not a cut-and-paste list of reasons that will suit everyone that is childfree, and not a list of reasons why no one should have kids. I'm not a member of VHEMT, and if someone really and truly cannot imagine a life without kids and is going to be a good parent, I think they should go for it. I'm assuming that they've done the same amount of soul-searching I have, and found themselves to be differently inclined than I am.
Also, I'm happy to discuss any of this with anyone--if you bingo me, I probably already have a great comeback in mind, and if you're just flat curious or considering declaring yourself childfree, I will answer any questions about myself, and I have a large collection of helpful information bookmarked and will be happy to link you to whatever part of it is relevant. I really think that the vast majority of parents don't put enough thought into the decision to become a parent, and this is what leads to abuse, neglect, and problem children. If you would never work in a daycare center, maybe you should rethink having your own kids, you know?
( The lengthy list is under here. )
