Fortune cookies live up to name
NEW YORK (United Press International via COMTEX) -- At least 110 Powerball lottery players used fortune cookies in March to collectabout $19 million in second prize winnings.
Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State LotteryAssociation, told the New York Times a panic began at 11:30 p.m. March30 when he got a call from a suspicious employee.
Normally only four or five people would guess five out of six numbers, but there were 110 in the 29 states where Powerball is played, and depending on how much each of them bet, the payout would be between $100,000 and $500,000 each.
"We didn't sleep a lot that night," Strutt said.
Investigators began looking into possible fraud, but it was inTennessee where the mystery began unraveling when the first three winners showed up to collect and said the numbers in their fortune cookies had been lucky.
It took digging, but the cookies were all traced back to a New York City company that ships out the same numbers in thousands of cookies every day.
Memo to Hurley: Fortune cookies are much safer than crazy people. XD
