on the entertainment front...

Dear Tom Cruise:

We all know that Katie Holmes is taller than you. We really do. But I saw your wedding pics, and clearly you were standing on a box in some of them. There was one, though, where you looked like you were both the same height, and yet your feet were on the floor. I can only imagine that your new wife was kneeling on a box under her voluminous poofy dress.

This is idiocy. If neither one of you is embarrassed about the fact that she's taller (and in this day and age, no one should be--and keep in mind that it's your face, not your height, that's made you famous), PLEASE BURN THE BOX. Really. I'll send you a personal note of thanks.

Dear People Magazine:

Okay. I had no problems when you picked Johnny Depp and Matthew McConaughey as the Sexiest Men Alive. But GEORGE CLOONEY? He's barely even CUTE, never mind SEXY! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??? Why not Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, or Sean Bean? (We'll give a few years to David Wenham and Karl Urban, who really aren't known enough in the States. Yet.) I can't even name a single movie Clooney's been in (ever!), but the men I named all have long, respectable careers behind them. WHY? WHY, I ASK!

~~~Sarah
Anyway. Sexiest Man Alive issue bragged on the cover that they were featuring 204 sexy guys total.
Number I recognized (as in, I could name something they've been in): 74.
Number I think are actually sexy (as in, whether I recognized them or not, made me look twice and go "ooh!"): 46.
Number I think are downright ugly (including Brad Pitt, another undeserving recipient of the SMA): 16.
Most annoying thing about the whole issue: Elijah has a full-page interview (yes, my scan) in which he discusses Happy Feet and Bobby, but is not featured anywhere among those 204 guys.
ETA: But if you're a Harry Potter fan, particularly of the Weasley twins, this was cool!
Because George Clooney IS sexy!!
[identity profile] gamgeefest.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
George Clooney has been in Oceans Eleven, Oceans Twelve, Good Night and Good Luck, Spy Kids, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Perfect Storm, several seasons of ER, Three Kings, Thin Red Line, Out of Sight, Batman and Robin, One Fine Day, was a regular extra on Roseanne for a few seasons, was in 3 eps of Facts for Life - to name only a few. So you see, he's been around a *long* time, longer even than many of those LOTR actors you named. And while he certainly isn't my type, I can say that he is good looking.
hehe This is the sexiest *men*, not the sexiest *stick boy* so Lij and Orli never stood a chance. ;) Was Shemar Moore mentioned?
[identity profile] thehobbitwaffle.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
In my mind, People has redeemed themselves by including Steven Colbert.
Elijah is geek sexy. The world will never understand.
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he's not. Not really. I'll grant him "pretty cute for an older guy." But not sexy.
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen any of those, lol, though after I posted it I remembered that he was in ER.
And that's my point--he's been around TOO long. He's OLD. And he LOOKS it. The SMA should be someone (like Matthew McConaughey) who is young, or someone (like Johnny Depp) who looks a heckuva lot younger than he actually is.
And did you see Kingdom of Heaven? Or even any of the promos? Orli is capable of not being a stick boy. (He put on 30 pounds of muscle for that movie, which he then had to turn around and lose again for PotC2. XD)
I want to say Shemar Moore was mentioned on one of the pages where it was like "sexiest guys that wear glasses" or "sexiest guys in their 30s" or whatever. (Matthew Fox, Daniel Dae Kim, and Terry O'Quinn were all such mentions.) Where it was just a pic and a name, no article. I'll look again if you really want to know.
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Steven Colbert's article was pretty darn amusing. Have you seen it, or would you like me to scan it for ya?
EXACTLY. He's never going to make it, unfortunately. But come on! Orli! Or VIGGO! My God, Viggo's old enough for them and has a huge pre-LotR body of work. If he could just have one out-of-the-ballpark hit movie he'd probably get it for that year. (I mean, that's what happened to Depp with PotC!)
SCAN!!!!
I'm surprised Orlando didn't make it. It must because they were looking for men... *flees*
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have it with me but I'll bring it along next time. (Maybe tomorrow, probably Monday.)
*glares*
[identity profile] eol-mithrandir.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, George Clooney has something that most of these young whipper-snappers don't have, and that is suaveity. And he is tall, and, at least in his roles, is gentlemanly and thoughtful. When did sexyness (or is it sexiness) become reduced to age limits. that what's the matter with kids today, if a person doesn't match their cardboard cut-out to the letter, than the person is overlooked (or underlooked depending on the relative topographical differences between the two in question). Besides EW, too short, most women like tall men like GC or Christian Bale.
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Johnny Depp's not that tall.
And I'm just saying--GC is NOT attractive! I like a few OTHER older guys--Johnny Depp (who's over 40 IIRC) and Viggo Mortensen to name a few. I'll stop there because you'd probably laugh at some of the others...
Are you calling me a KID? XD
[identity profile] gamgeefest.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I started watching Kingdom of Heaven and then stopped because it was kind of slow. Never really had much interest in it and everyone I talked to said it was lame.
[identity profile] gamgeefest.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
You *are* a kid! :P
Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)
[identity profile] eol-mithrandir.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
you're younger wait, older,never mind that first thought.... but anyway it was just a embellishment on the old geezer persona. you're only a kid if you think you're a kid
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm turning 21 in... (wait for it)...three months and three days! What the heck?
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'm not a kid and haven't been for a very long time.
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I liked it, but will grant that it was pretty much because of Orli. But that's beside the point--the point being that he's capable of not being a stick boy. ^_-
[identity profile] rena-librarian.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
May or may not scan it today, we'll see how much I get done and if the computers with scanners free up...
